Red-Tailed Hawk

There’s an abundance of critters that visit our backyard and the wooded area behind it.  Most of them are peaceful and practice a live and let live philosophy.  However, for the last several weeks a seemingly young Red-Tailed Hawk has been hunting the area.

I’m lucky to have a chair, which is a favorite reading perch for me, that provides me an excellent view.  This morning the hawk chose to stare me down from the tree line of the woods.   A week ago it was mere feet from me as it landed on our outside A/C unit.

Rabbits, squirrels and larger birds have noticeably been laying low.

Red-Tailed Hawk, ‘cooling it.’

  1. LOL, the photo looking in the window just screams “caption me” – kinda like “pssst, got any treats in there?”

    • Yeah, it certainly lends itself to captions. 😀

It surprised me (startled for a second) how bold it was. But I don’t know how much it could see inside. It was about six feet from me, but there was some mirror/reflection on the window from the outside. Luckily I had my phone with me.

  2. A wonderful portrait of that young hawk, Earl!
In my garden I can hear the sharp cries of hawks, even see one through my binoculars, but they never came even close to photography distance.

    • Markus, seeing one of these hawks this close was unusual, and I was lucky to have a camera and smartphone handy. Thanks, and I hope you are doing well!

  3. Both images are great! I like you caption for the second one. You are lucky to have a haven for wildlife and I believe they are also lucky to have your backyard as a haven. Maybe you will need to start reading to them. It has always intrigued me think about what our brothers and sisters of nature think of us. Maybe we need to ask them.
