“If life throws you a lemon – make lemonade.”
Joan Collins
Note: There are more versions of this quote in the wild than you can shake a stick at.

Bonnie has always enjoyed gardening and nurturing flowers and plants. This year she ordered a lemon tree. A Meyer Lemon Tree, to be exact.
“If you haven’t heard of a Meyer lemon before, you’re missing out on this farmers market favorite. Meyer lemons are a thin-skinned hybrid fruit, part lemon and part mandarin orange, making them much sweeter than the kind of lemon you’d see at a grocery store.
You can’t find Meyer lemons on your grocery run since they aren’t grown commercially. If you want to get a taste of these sweet-tart fruits, you need to consider getting your very own Meyer lemon tree.” – This Old House
We didn’t expect much the first year from the scraggly little tree you see above, even though they often produce fruit in the first couple of years, but as you can see below, just before Christmas, we harvested three beautiful large lemons.

While the quote above may imply an excellent thing to do when life gives you lemons is make lemonade, I’m here to tell you that there’s perhaps a better option. Make a lemon pie! Or, in my case, ask someone who is a much better cook/baker to make one for you. Luckily, I know someone. 😉

You can taste the difference between an ordinary lemon and the Meyers hybrid lemon/mandarin orange. It’s a bit sweeter but still has the sour lemon bite, and there’s just a hint of orange.
Wonderful idea. My sister has lemon trees in Arizona so I’m always treated with a lemon meringue pie when I visit. Well, almost every time. Happy New Year to you two!
So, is that your piece of the pie?
Well, it could have been my rather large piece of pie, but luckily cooler heads prevailed, and Bonnie cut two reasonable pieces that we both enjoyed. Monte, I hope you’re well on the path of recovery and have a Happy New Year!
