“The waves of the sea help me get back to me.”

There’s something about walking along a beach, especially during a surprisingly calm winter day when few others are around.  The recurring sound of waves washing ashore and the slight bite of the breeze makes you feel alive, while the vast ocean bestows a perspective of how small you are.  It’s easy to turn your thoughts within, search for the significant parts of your life, and contemplate what might lie ahead, especially at the end of one year and the beginning of another.

I do not enjoy crowds of people and prefer not to fight over parking or wait in long queues.  I rarely visit a touristy beach during the summer but enjoy quiet times during the winter.  Those days when the weather is nearer to a welcoming fall or spring day are an especially appreciated gift.

These late evening images were from an eleventh-floor VRBO condo balcony with my Olympus E-M1II. Black and white seemed to fit the mood from this recent visit, not as a statement of depression or unease but one of calmness and reflection.

As this is my first post of 2023, I hope this new year treats everyone with kindness.

  1. Happy New Year, Earl.

  2. Those beaches look wide open for a nice, crowd-free swim!
(I’ve been hearing more about the health benefits of a cold dip :) )

    • I guess no one here has heard about those health benefits, Mark. I didn’t see a single soul actually in the ocean. Have you ventured into one of the lakes up there in Michigan (maybe after breaking the ice)? 😉

  3. I like all tree images, my friend. I agree the black and white treatment works rather well. I also do not like crowds or queues. I will include the queues involved in calling a service representative or doctors office. Hope you two have a wonderful coming year!!

    • I agree about any queues, but sometimes there aren’t any alternatives. Thanks, Monte; I hope your 2023 turns out to be good!

  4. Happy New Year, Earl.

  5. A – albeit belated – Happy New Year to you, Earl! I can connect very well with this scenery, and whist I am not a complete misanthrope, the absence of people especially in the first image creates an intensive feeling of serenity.
When it comes to beach holidays, I am completely on your side: I only want to go there when the crowds have left, even (or especially because) there’s less distraction and noise, and when bicycling, I have the landscape almost to myself.
