When Negative’s Not Bad

Calm waters broken by an unidentified whale tail, Southern Coast of Alaska – @2008

I sometimes forget how visually impactful negative space can be in enhancing an image. It can evoke emotions, suggest depth, and highlight the relationship between the subject and its environment. It supports a minimalist approach, encouraging engagement with the narrative composition, transforming scenes into compelling visual stories.

Breaking the surface of calm waters, probably an Orca, Southern Coast of Alaska – @2008

These photos were made during a 2008 Alaskan cruise from our cabin’s balcony with a Nikon D300 and the longest lens I had with me at the time, which wasn’t long enough.

Eighteen years later, and thanks to some very capable photo-editing applications, perhaps they have found “life.” 😉

Both wonderful and evoke a feeling of calm, harmony with the sea. Rare in this noisy world.
