Counting Cardinals
It’s just past noon on Sunday, and there’s a little over an inch of mainly sleet and ice on the ground here east of Charlotte, NC, as we wait to see what Winter Storm Fern brings this afternoon and evening. It seems the earlier “disaster” predictions have been toned down somewhat. If it’s going to be ice, I hope it stops soon! Our feeding station in the backyard near the Fern Hill project area is extremely popular today, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen the Cardinals looking as vibrant as they do now. I didn’t push the red saturation at all in these phone snapshots.
There are so many birds trying to feed that, after taking these photos, I spread dehydrated mealworms along the ground under the feeder for all to enjoy.
Everyone, stay warm and safe.

Katherine and I were just noting today that we seem to have seen more cardinals this year than blue jays. That’s opposite of expectations and past years.
Interesting that you’ve seen a lot of cardinals, too. I wonder what the cause could be?
I was amazed at how many robins I saw yesterday. No cardinals out here but plenty of robins and bluejays. It seems most of us need to sit tight inside with a fire and cup of tea. Maybe a piece of apple pie.
We have a good many robins here as well, but they are standoffish and never come to the bird feeder for some unknown reason. Warm apple pie, with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream. Sounds wonderful!
