I recently set out six new Wood Ferns.  According to those who should know, this is a good time in Climate Zone 7 to set out ferns, and from my experience this last year, Wood Ferns have done the best with the shade and the soil on our backyard hillside.  I only lost one fern this summer, and although some others seem to be struggling, they aren’t Wood Ferns.  I also have a couple of Holly Ferns who seem to love the conditions.

We’ll see how they survive this coming winter.

  1. I love your little garden, what I will call a place of quiet and sacredness. I have my own excitement of what it will look like in 5, 10, 20 years. I imagine you do also. Hope you enjoy ti every year!

    • I would like to see that hillside/bank a solid covering of ferns, but that may take longer than I have. Perhaps those that follow will wonder how they all got there. 😎

  2. Off to a great start Earl. I think you’ll be surprised how fast those ferns start spreading if they find they like it there. We have a bunch of ostrich ferns in our yard that seem to spread every year. I have a similar hill to this that gets a bit more sun now with a tree that died last year that I’d like to see fill in with prairie grasses, but ferns are my backup if they don’t do well. It is getting tricker to determine which plants will do well in the long run with planting zones shifting due to climate change. :/

    • Thanks, Mark. This first years been an experimental year to determine what type of ferns might thrive. One ostrich fern didn’t make it, but several wood ferns seem to be flourishing. Yeah, it used to be pretty predictable as to average temperatures and precipitation for any given time of the year, but not so much now. I’ll switch to a backup plan if ferns don’t work out, but I’m still hopeful. Have a good weekend!
