Agathla Peak is a remnant of an ancient volcanic structure emplaced during the Oligocene about 25 million years ago. All that remains is a severely eroded volcanic plug or diatreme comprising brecciated volcanic rock. The composition of Agathla Peak is Minette, a rare igneous rock rich in biotite and orthoclase (potassium feldspar).

Imagine having this in your “backyard.”

  1. I have piled up rocks in my back yard but the tallest I could stack them is about 3 feet. Not very impressive by comparison but they do look nice. Nice shot, Earl.

    • Thanks, Ken. Maybe you need to give your pile of rocks a few million years and let the rest of the earth erode from around them. Have a good one!

  2. (Sorry if this is a repeat comment, trying another browser because I kept getting errors)

Looks like a great place to explore – I’ll bet there are all sorts of little caves and crevices – peaks to climb on.

    • Odd, my comment seemed to have worked using Firefox, but kept giving me errors using Safari today.

      • I don’t know if your Safari errors were limited to just this site, but I’ve not made any recent changes that I know of that might cause it. But it could be something in a plug-in update, most of which apply automatically.

        • (testing a reply from Safari)

Who knows these days right? Trying to figure out the root issue is like digging through a haystack for a piece of hay. :)

(and yet the reply in Safari seems to have worked so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • This is as close as we got to the structure, but you are probably correct about there being many features to explore.

  3. No need to think about landscaping your property, nature has already done that.

    • Yeah, but wouldn’t it make a wonderfully grand water feature…water bubbling out the top. ~wink~ LOL
      Hope you’re doing well!
