Departing Juneau, AK, we continued our trip by heading north to Skagway, AK. We arrived at Skagway early Wednesday morning, May 21st, and scheduled our “big adventure” to be a four hour ride on the White Pass Railway, Yukon Route, to the top of White Pass and back.
During the Yukon Gold rush days, in the late 1800s, the White Pass into Canada was the only land based route to carry in supplies and take out gold from Skagway. In approximately 2 years, 35,000 men at the cost of 35 lives built the current narrow gauge White Pass Railroad to make this journey more feasible.
Skagways winter population is approximately 850 hearty souls but swells to 3,000 residents for the milder summer months.
