September 2007

I agree with him.Richard, in his post, quotes the statement that “With open source development, you are getting the “Wisdom of Crowds.”  Maybe in some cases, but it’s also been my experience that what you often get is multiple opinions, a lack of focus and difficulty in setting direction….  I’m not crazy about it being locked to only Apple’s hardware but at least the hardware it’s locked to is decent and I have to admit it makes for consistent experience.

Apple: iPhone unlocking is a no-no

by Earl on September 24, 2007

in Apple Mac, Software

Apple: “iPhone SIM unlockers will end up with iBricks” – via tuaw.comThe short of it?  Apple’s telling consumers that “unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone’s software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed.”  For consumers everywhere, that’s a daunting proposition if you’ve bitten the bullet and chosen to run one of the numerous unlocking applications out there.Enough said….

White Heron in Flight

by Earl on September 24, 2007

in Photography

I know this White Heron was tired of me chasing it around this small pond while we were in Florida.  I was determined to get the shots I wanted so we went around the pond a couple of times.  :-) I thought I would share one of the series of shots from an “escape flight.”

Recent Reads: Plague Year

by Earl on September 23, 2007

in Reviews

Those few who’ve managed to escape the plague struggle to stay alive on the highest mountains, but time is running out-there is famine and war, and the environment is crashing worldwide.  Humanity’s last hope lies with a top nanotech researcher aboard the International Space Station-and with a small group of survivors in California who risk a daring journey below the death line…Thoughts after reading:It was an entertaining short read that was somewhat predicable….  Maybe it was for this reason that it took me a while to get into and identify with the story. The nano altitude destruction trigger was a new hook for the story and made for some interesting thoughts and story angles.

Sunshine and the Beach

by Earl on September 21, 2007

in Photography

I thought I would share a few photo from that day.I stepped out of my comfort zone on this day and actually asked strangers if I could take their picture….  I’ve one last shot from the beach that I know some of you will enjoy.  I took some flack for this shot from my wife but what’s the beach without pretty girls in bikini’s?

Experiencing a malaise with blogging

by Earl on September 18, 2007

in Observations

How many ways can you write about how to blog, or how to improve your blog, or how to establish your brand?… I’ve long thought writing about social networking sites boring, but now it’s just damn irritating.

Florida has great clouds

by Earl on September 17, 2007

in Observations, Photography

I did have a couple of opportunities to grab my camera and take some shots.I’m not a big fan of Florida….  Besides, I like to have clearly defined seasons and you lose that in Florida. But I will have to admit that Florida has some great clouds.  You can count on outstanding ones in the afternoons, which may include summer showers.I will miss this about Florida.

It’s good to be back

by Earl on September 16, 2007

in Observations

Bonnie, in her Mom’s 14 year old Nissan (only 40k miles,) following me in the Toyota RAV4 towing a UHAUL trailer loaded with a few pieces of furniture and a number of boxes.  Behind us we were leaving an empty but clean house. That’s what twenty-seven years in Vero Beach were reduced to…a few pieces of furniture and a number of boxes It certainly reinforces that “things” are not what’s important; family, friends and people are.  Nine and a half hours, a couple of tanks of gas, coffee, and one Red Bull later we arrived home.
