I’ve written in the past that Apple’s iPhone will be the catalyst for changes in the cellular phones and mobile device we’ll carry, no mater what the model and manufacturer.

A recent post in MacNN titled “iPhone gives mobile industry new direction” agrees with this premise and goes into some detail.

MacNN quotes a survey suggest that up to 16 percent of those planning to purchase a “smart phone” in the next six months will acquire an iPhone. Another mentioned survey from ChangeWave suggest the iPhone is causing a virtual upheaval in the industry and is in fact changing the game.

The real power of the iPhone is not in the mass of features it offers.  There’s plenty of other phone’s out there that are clearly the feature gorilla’s of the airways.  No, the secret of the iPhones draw is in the way people interface with it, it’s ease of use and it’s simple “tech-no-sensual” appeal.

An appeal that may soon get wider exposure.

According to AppleInsider, we should see Apple start to broaden the iPhone distribution to a number of prime retailers in the next few weeks, well ahead of the holiday shopping season.  One retailer that comes to mind is Best Buy.

Mobile device manufacturers should be getting the message that Apple is in the cellular/mobile device business in a big way and is serious about being successful for over the long haul.  The current iPhone may only be the beginning.
