Apple iTunes now holds a 9.8% of market share of the US music retail business moving ahead of Amazon and following closely behind Walmart (15.8%) and Best Buy (13.8%) according to a recent report from market research firm NPD.

Digital music only accounts for 13.8% of total sales of music in the US with physical CD sales still accounting for 86.2% of all sales.

The iTunes move is notable because the NPD report considered all retailers, including brick and mortar stores, and not just on-line retailers. One could only expect this percentage to continue to increase if Apples iPod and iPhone are successful into the future.
