This past weekend the United Way in Salisbury, NC, held a kick-off Soapbox Derby downtown.
The starting point was from the town square, racing east on Main St. which provides a decent downhill slope.
The finish line is within sight…
I don’t know who the overall winner of the Derby was, but in this heat the “Chandler Charger” beat the “Freightliner” Bullet by about a car length.
I shot with my 50mm f/1.8 mounted on my D700 as we walked around enjoying the activities. I’ve not shot with this combination recently so it was a special treat getting to rediscover this little gem of a lens.
Great shots, Earl. Hailing from Akron, OH, home of the All-American Soap Box Derby, I remember that this is a huge thing in Akron, banners everywhere, kids in neighborhoods making their own little soap box derby racers and racing them down local hills. It was lots and lots of fun. Thanks for the memories!
Paul, hey, I guess that right there is a “cool” fact about Akron, OH, isn’t it! I hadn’t seen a soap box derby in ages…it was kinda nice to view and photograph this one.
Yeah, baby! Akron gets the cool points! :-)
I built and raced one of those babies when I was a young’un. What memories I have and thanks for reminding me of those moments.
Monte, seems a Soapbox Derby brings back memories for a lot of people. Glad I took and published these…they clicked with me as well.
Nice images Earl! The soapboxes sure don’t look anything like I use to race down the hill next to our house in New England.
Thanks, Steve. Yeah, they’ve come a long way from what I remember too. :-)
Super image . Super motion and stunning contrast in this monochrome .
Hi Mariana, thanks, glad you liked these.
A fine race photo. The long format works well with this image. Sounds and looks like an exciting sport.
I appreciate it, Don!
funny stuff, excellent reportage
I don’t remember seeing a lot of b&w shots from you Earl. Thoroughly enjoyed this entry and the sequence of images. A great story told here.
