Show and tell Thursday…
This is a Sulphur Shelf or Chicken Mushroom and can be eatable or poison depending upon what type of tree it grows upon. It’s coloring and size, about 8-9 inches (20-23cm) across, was pretty startling in the browns and greens of the forest floor where it was growing.
While the old joke is “everything taste like chicken” and perhaps being named “Chicken Mushroom” this would as well, I won’t be tasting it to confirm if it’s true or not.
This looks more like something which would consume a chicken! ;-)
Great image Earl! Knowing a bit about fungi, I determined long ago to get my mushrooms at the grocery store — less chance to make a costly mistake.
Steve, I’m sure you know much more then I do about fungi, I had to search the Internet to ID this one. I’m like you, the grocery store is the best place for mushrooms. Have a good weekend!
I totally agree, Earl and nice image.
Monte, thanks!
Nice image reminds me of a rose.
Don C., thanks, I think it looks more appealing in this photo then it did in person but I can see where the rose reference comes from.
Earl,
Interesting photo and story. I’d probably pass on eating it, but I guess if I were in a position of “survival” I would need your instruction, LOL. Nice photo, lots of detail and a pleasing background blur!
Alan
Hi Alan, thanks. Oh, if I was hungry enough it would lunch provided it could satisfy the safe to eat requirements. Just too many chances of a mistake to make me feel comfortable.
Looks like you have all the ingredients for a great salad in this shot Earl. Nice!
Thanks, Mark.
