Fanciful Friday: Shifting Sands
“Deserts are not the barren wastelands we often think they are. They are filled with a unique beauty, a rich diversity of life and a profound sense of peace.” – Edward Abbey
This week, “FancifulFriday” has taken yet another different direction—one that is more thoughtful and a bit more serious, although not too serious. I’m grateful that this blog is named Meandering Passage, as it allows me a lot of flexibility in my writing. While working on these accompanying images, I realized I needed a way to convey scale, so I added some lone figures that I like to think are exploring. With their addition, the direction of my thoughts shifted, and this post came to be.

Like A Journey Through the Shifting Sands of a Vast Desert
I can easily imagine the journey through life as adventuring through a vast, sprawling desert. The sun blazes down, casting long shadows on dunes that shift and change with every gust of wind. One moment, you’re standing atop a high dune, feeling on top of the world, and the next, you’re stumbling down an unseen slope, wondering how you ended up with sand in your shoes—and possibly even your lunch.
Now, if that doesn’t perfectly encapsulate the ups and downs of life, I don’t know what does! As we venture through the landscape of our experiences, it often feels as though we are traversing terrain where the only constants are uncertainty and the effort required to make progress. The beauty of this metaphor is how it resonates with our quest for self-discovery, often marked by moments of clarity, confusion, joy, and the occasional tumble into a hidden pit of “what was I thinking?”
The Dunes of Discovery
Each dune in this endless desert represents a new chapter in our lives, waiting to be explored. Some dunes are towering, offering breathtaking views of what lies ahead. These are the moments of achievement—the job promotion, the new relationship, the perfect recipe that actually worked (because let’s be honest, for many of us it usually doesn’t). From these heights, you might feel invincible, like a desert king surveying your kingdom of successes.
But then there are the treacherous, crumbling slopes, the ones where you lose your footing and suddenly find yourself rolling down, arms flailing, sand spilling everywhere. These are the moments we remember for all the wrong reasons: a job loss, a break-up, or that ill-advised decision you make even when you know better.

The Mirage of ‘What If?’
As we navigate this sandy expanse, we encounter mirages—the shimmering illusions of ‘what could have been.’ It’s too easy to fall for these seductive visions, much like spotting a shimmering oasis in the distance. We often find ourselves daydreaming about alternate paths, like that one time you had the chance to study and live abroad, and instead, you opted to play it safe in a thankless job with endless loops of Netflix and snacks.
Sure, lounging in front of the TV with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s can feel like a well-deserved oasis, but deep down, you can’t shake the thought: “What if?” Would you have summited that daring peak, or would you have merely found a different flavor of despair?
The Beauty in the Dust
And amid all this ‘desert’ turbulence, there is unmistakable beauty to be found. On occasion, as you sink your toes into the soft sands of a new experience, you’ll discover breathtaking sunsets, incredible wildlife, and the delightfully weird things life throws your way. It reminds us that while life may be unpredictable, it is also filled with stunning surprises.
As we meander through this sandy expanse of our lives, it’s important to remember that the shifting dunes may feel daunting at times, but they also encourage growth and exploration. Keep your eyes peeled for those waves of change, embrace the humor in every stumble, and don’t forget that every grain of sand contributes to the beauty of your own personal desert.
So maybe next time I find myself questioning whether my life is a beautiful adventure or just a series of unfortunate events, I’ll try to remember: Every desert is vast and unpredictable, but it’s also filled with unexpected wonders waiting to be discovered. Our lives, like deserts, are not barren wastelands. They are filled with a unique beauty, a rich diversity of opportunities and if we work at it, a profound sense of peace.
Now, if only someone could help me get the sand out of my shoes! 😉
Have fun this weekend! (TGIFF)
Lately, I am increasingly drawn to Minimalism for its emphasis on simpler shapes and colors. I find that minimalist art has a calming effect on me and provides a wonderful canvas for creative use of color.

Great post. Adventures are worth all the tiny grains of sand in my shoes. 😉
