Hillside Fern Project: September 2025

I haven’t posted an update on my fern project in a couple of months, but overall, they are doing well. I did lose two ferns that I planted last year, but I’ve replaced them, and the new ones seem to be thriving in the same locations. I’ve noticed significant differences in the hardiness of ferns depending on where you source them. It’s also important to consider the specific conditions of the planting area and the types of ferns you choose. I initially thought ferns were all quite hardy and would grow just about anywhere in shade, but that’s not necessarily true. A hard lesson I’ve learned through trial and error.
July and August were a mixed bag as far as temperatures and precipitation were concerned. We had several weeks that were exceptionally hot and dry, which required regular watering of the ferns. However, I’d set up an irrigation method and timer in the spring, so it only required connecting a water hose and turning on the water. Laziness goes a long way toward ingenuity. 🙄

I smile when I see someone get excited and involved in a project like this. And I assume Bonnie is part of this also. The ferns share this world with us, can become close friends with those who want that, and being us joy.
…and it keeps me mostly out of trouble. Haha!
We barely had any rain all of August, so our ferns are looking less than happy, but we do use our sprinkers. I am still hoping for some spreading next spring!
I haven’t noticed any spreading with my ferns thus far. I thought I’d see some this year, but no such luck. There’s more to this fern-raising business than I thought. 😉
