Not any one subject to write about today but a mixture of short thoughts.
I’ve been watching the 10-part HBO miniseries “The Pacific” airing Sunday nights. This series is executive-produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg — the same team which did “Band of Brothers” and follows men of the 1st battalion 7th Marines in the Pacific theatre. Each episode also features comments and recollections from Marines who experienced the events. IMO, excellent series and depiction of horrific events — I’m hooked. (Amberle, thanks for letting me know the series was showing.)
I’ve not bitten on Apple’s iPad yet. I may after the Wi-Fi + G3 version arrives, slated for the end of this month. I my case it’s probably not a question of if, but when. Any photographers out there “drank the Kool-Aid” yet?
I recently loaned my Canon S90 camera to my stepson and his new bride to take on their honeymoon and by all reports they not only loved it but are trying to think of a way to keep it. The S90 uses the same sensor as the Canon G11 so I’m not surprised they loved it. Highly recommended if you’re needing a really good camera that actually fits pockets.
I found the pink blooms of the tree in this photo beautiful in part because it didn’t over power the space. Its delicate nature, mixed background of white blooms and fresh greenery made a pleasing combination for me — in this case, less was more. The only adjustment to the photo was a little added sharpness and the border treatment.
A gorgeous touch of spring in your beautiful shot. Great color! I like it!
Thanks, Don!
Earl, this is a really fine image, where the pink gets the deserving value of its own. There is just enough blue to make the pink come to life even more. Really fine!
Re. the ipad: Of course the hype is big, but in the more intellectual papers it gets a somewhat mixed receipt – it is seen as a device developed for the passive use of the internet, for consuming, but not suitable for active usage like writing or creating something. For me: as long as my laptop works for both purposes, there is not much interest in an additional device.
Markus, thanks on the image.
Ref the iPad: It depends upon what you consider “active usage.” I understand it’s very easy to actively produce social content such as blog updates, tweets on twitter, Facebook updates, emails, and simple documents in addition to what you called passive usages. However, I don’t believe it would be very good for graphical design, in depth editing or programming — but then with a wireless keyboard? I read of someone also using one for checking his Exchange work email (worked great) and with Microsoft Remote Desktop to access and control his work PC.
Consider that the first group of social/passive activities constitutes probably 95+ percent of the current needs of the average Internet user, Apple will probably sell a bundle and they are sure to improve capabilities with future updates.
As far as creating content, I think the iPad will be a great hit with artists like sketchers and painters. I love the Sketcher app for the iPhone, but find it cumbersome on the small screen at times. The larger screen will be a great fit for this app.
It certainly would be nice if things like camera manuals and such become offered as e-books. I think photo book publishing as e-books given the vibrant screen could also become a nice way to display work.
I will probably end up getting one. I wondered about the necessity for the 3G option. I think I would only use it at home, or perhaps out and about to show content that is already on the device. I certainly don’t want to give AT&T any more of my cash for the hotspot feature they should be giving me on my iPhone.
My wife has been wanting to see Pacific, her dad was stationed in the islands during WWII.
Wonderful mix of colors. Nature is really beautiful and you know how to capture its beauty !
I have a small laptop…and I think I will leave it at that for the moment… I prefer to save my money for a new camera or lens… ;-)
