Leaving Danby, Vermont, we drove almost directly west across Central New York State, first to Lake George, NY, and then leisurely zigzagged further west. It was an incredible drive showcasing near-peak fall colors, but I felt a bit numb after two and a half days of leaf-peeping photography in Vermont, so not many in-route photos were made. Our day’s destination was the city of Oswego, NY, on the shores of Lake Ontario, where I discovered new subjects for photographic inspiration.

While I enjoyed the photograph opportunities, it was apparent that the joy of this trip was traveling off commercial paths, affording a closer connection with local everyday life. If time constraints do not drive you, traveling via only secondary/local roads is much less stressful.

Again, well done series. I understand the numb feeling as there are mornings when the sunrises are just not doing it for me. That may be the gift we photographers have in that the seemingly mundane can lead us to discover new subjects and perspectives. I have also found the side roads and by-passes fill my pleasure basket rather than the commercial stuff. I much prefer the mom-and-pop places than the maddening malls.
