“For last year’s words belong to last year’s language and next year’s words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning.”
― T.S. Eliot

Blooms On A Wall
The end of the year 2021 is just around the corner, and many might say it’s coming none too soon. I had high hopes at the end of 2020 that 2021 would be much better. To a degree, it has been, but certainly not as great as I’d hoped.
One fact that has continued to mystify me this year is how so many continue to choose to ignore or don’t believe in science in this day and age. Perhaps it’s because science is a moving target that continues to evolve and change the more we learn and understand in its early stages. Still, it’s incredible that minds capable of believing in an unseen, all-powerful being might not believe in something that can be touched, measured and proven.
One thing that has become clear this year is that science doesn’t care if we believe or not; the scientific consequences of our actions will occur in any case.
I’m choosing to enter 2022 optimistically. I’ll try to be ready for opportunities and be grateful for the good moments, and there are always good moments. Even the most barren of walls can be a backdrop for beautiful blooms, and as T.S. Eliot so well said, the coming year is an opportunity for a new voice and new beginnings.
This post will probably be my final for 2021, so I’ll sincerely wish everyone happy holidays and a wonderful new year! Be safe, be well and prosper in 2022.
Well, Mr. Eliot came up with the perfect words for a transition from any year to the next but it does seem more pertinent this time around. Each new year we tend to seek those comforting phrases or a hopeful adage. I wish you the best of a new year, Earl and look forward to your commentary come 2022. Take care.
Thanks, Joe. It seems ‘normal’ has been perhaps forever redefined, and we’re still in the process of discovering what that means. Best wishes!
2021 was quite a strange year, but at my age, the now two “strange” years amount to less than 5% of my lifetime already and I feel that I’ve had stranger years in a “normal” world in my youth. ;-) Happy Holidays and all the best for 2022 to you and your family, Earl!
After, as you say, two “strange” years, I sometimes wonder if this strangeness is the new normal, at least for now. Thanks and best wishes for the coming year, Alexander.
If there is one thing about science, it seems there are consequences for some that ignore it, and eventually it probably catches up with many. As frustrating as it is, I know it is nothing I can change. I do think we are experiencing perhaps a inflection point in human history and the outcome is quite uncertain. All kind of heavy stuff that weighs on one’s mind thinking about this artificial transition from one year to the next.
I do hope you get to enjoy the rest of your year and keep healthy. More words to come next year I’m sure (and I hope you do)
Well, according to numerologists, the focus of next year will be all about getting back to normalcy and rebuilding our lives along with finding a balance between work and relationships. However, there will still be some conflict between opposing forces. There’s science, and then there’s “science.” ~wink~
I’m sure there will be more words here come next year, just looking for perhaps a different voice. Thanks, Mark, and best wishes as we head into the new year!
Love the image. The wall makes for a beautiful canvas.
I’m not so sure the “minds capable of believing in an unseen, all-powerful being” really don’t believe in that either. Seems many talk about their believe in a dogma foremost but fail to live that. Enough negative talk from me. Nature will have the final word.
Hope you have a wonderful holiday season with family! I also look forward to opportunities and offer gratitude on a daily basis.
You are probably right about the majority of “believers,” Monte. Far easier to talk the talk than to walk the walk. Thanks for the kind words about the photo. Bonnie and I have both so enjoyed your blog and photos this year.
As always, best wishes to you for this coming year!
