A surprising find for us in Idaho was the St. Anthony Sand Dunes north of St. Anthony, Idaho. not far from Idaho Falls.
These wonderful sand dunes were created by prevailing winds carried sand from the nearby Teton and Snake Rivers and deposited them among the hills north of St. Anthony. There’s 10,000 acres of dunes with some rising to 400 feet.
The sand dunes represent the largest rideable sand dunes in the United States and during the months of April to October enthusiasts can be found riding the dunes in Sand Cars, dune buggies, UTV’s, Four Wheelers, and Dirt Bikes. You can find good photographs of the dunes and descriptions of the activities here.
Well, I didn’t know about those. Amazing what we can learn living vicariously through wandering friends. Looks like Maggie enjoyed them. Since most of the sand she’s encountered, I wonder if she was questioning where the ocean was. :-)
And it’s amazing, Monte, what you can stumble upon when you’re just riding around to see what you can see! :-) We always have great luck finding interesting things if we just let them find us.
Very much like our images, they just seem to appear.
Very cool. It’s kinda funny, after photographing dunes in Michigan and getting some satisfaction about surprising people it is in Michigan, I thought on these photos “That’s Idaho??” :-) Such a great contrast between these and the surrounding crops.
Yes, Mark, it was surprising to us as well to see these towering dunes rising up behind a beautiful young grain field. We had never heard of these Idaho Dunes but they are a large source of motorized recreation.
