I’m purchasing a Nikon D700 full frame (FX) camera. I’ve been considering the D700 since it was announced, trying to resist the temptation, and have reached the point where I’ve decided to do it. Yes, all my efforts to hold back have given way.
I get much enjoyment these days from photography and so I’m taking money I’d planned for a computer upgrade and applying it to the D700 instead.
This decision was made in no small part due to already having lenses that will work in full frame with the D700. This allows me to purchase the D700 body only and spares a great deal of immediate expense for new FX capable lens.
I’ll have a decent beginning lens kit for the D700 consisting of:
- Nikkor AF 20mm f/2.8D;
- Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8D;
- Nikkor AF-S VR 105mm f/2.8G ED Macro;
- Nikkor AF 80-200mm 1:2.8D ED; and
- Tamron AF SP Di 200-500 1:5-6.3 LD.
The only area I think I’ll really be missing is a decent mid-range zoom for general photo walks. At a later date I may pick up a decent cheaper zoom lens to cover that gap.
My Nikon DX format camera will still see use as well.
Curses! You’re really pushing my buttons! :-) Congratulations on the purchase. I’ll have to be honest with you, I’m right there on the edge myself! Soon, you may seen my other cameras on e-Bay.
I don’t have nearly the starter kit of lenses that you do. I’ve only got and 80-200 mm f/2.8, and a 50 mm f/1.8. The rest are DX lenses. :-( However, based on my usual usage, I’d just need one wide angle zoom, 14-24 mm, and that’s about it.
Well, I’ll be looking for a full report! Oh yeah, BTW: You’ll never use that DX camera again! You only tell yourself that to allow you to get to sleep at night! ;-)
@Paul: Thanks! I’m looking forward to it and should have it sometime this next week. It was dumb luck most of my lenses will work with FX. My DX lenses are a couple of zooms, 10-20 mm and 18-200 mm.
With the D300 I’ve seldom shot under 18 mm and with the 1.5 DX factor that 18 mm is more like a visual 27 mm. So my 20 mm prime lens at full frame will put me in the same or a little wider visual range. Correct me if my thinking’s wrong on this.
I’ve read for macro photography the center photo sharpness of the D300 may still be a bit sharper then the FX format due to higher sensor density? We’ll see. But, you’re probably right about finding I’m not using DX any longer…I’ll keep it as a back-up. ;-)
After using the D70, D200, D300, and D90, I too broke down and purchased the D700. It arrived on Monday. I can’t tell you how much I love this thing!
I too broke down and purchased a D700 this week. You’ve got to love that full frame sensor. Now, I’ll have to beef up my non-DX lens collection – my pleasure!
@James: Congratulations on your new D700 FX. It’s a great camera and you’ll not regret it…but there will be moments you’ll miss the 1.5 magnification/crop factor of the DX. :-)
