You may have heard of the malicious action taken at CES where entire walls of monitors were turned off and presentations interrupted with the use of an infrared device.

The perpetrators of this act labeled it as a “prank.” I tend to agree with Seth Godin’s categorizing of it as a crime of vandalizing.

It’s very simple to blow this incident off by saying that no one got hurt, no one lost their job and it was only done to be funny, but by doing so you’re sending the message that this type of bad behavior is acceptable.

If these “pranks” are enabled or encouraged in the community by hiding their true nature under the guise of humor, then we all have lost.
