Anne, As Softly As Dawn

The chair beside her sits empty, the way she always kept it — there had never been room in a life given wholly to career. The someday of quiet relaxation she’d imagined had finally arrived, slipping into her life as softly as dawn.
As she rocks, her smile carries the years at its edges — not regret, just the quiet amusement of someone who spent decades earning this exact, ordinary morning, and is finally letting herself have it.

First I am amazed at this image. I want it on my bedroom wall!! I also enjoy your story. At first the empty chair was because here partner had died but I like how you say “the way she always kept it.” That took me by surprise and again showed me how I can easily misinterpret a scene. Well done!
Your take on the empty chair is probably the more normal assumption when you first see it. There’s no right or wrong; I just got to tell the story first. However, for me, it was always about her choice rather than a partner lost to death. But then I had two Aunts, both of whom had long careers but were never married, so that experience probably had something to do with initial thoughts. The “by myself, by choice” option also defined Anne as someone who probably cherished quiet time in the mornings with coffee and just her thoughts. It made her a bit more interesting. Or at least that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it! 😊
