We left Oswego, New York, and enjoyed the scenic backroads for two and a half days. Our journey took us south-southwest through New York into Pennsylvania, then south-southeast through West Virginia and Maryland to Virginia, near Richmond. Finally, we headed west-southwest toward our home in Charlotte, North Carolina. Somewhat strangely, autumn colors were only beginning to turn there, so there was another fall yet to enjoy.
A unique find for our last night of the trip was “The Inn at Blackstone.” It’s a relatively recent conversion of a historic building.
“Blackstone College for Girls — Over 126 years ago this grand building was a unique gesture to the area and welcomed excitement among the locals. The property initially was founded in 1894 as a female educational institute welcomed 71 students in her first year as a finishing school for girls attending 8th-12th grade studies. The campus started to grow and offered both boarding and day students with studies focused on teaching, academics, psychology, and philosophy. It officially became known at the Blackstone College for Girls a century ago upon reopening after a fire in 1922 in the current classical revival brick building. This beautiful campus was a preferred choice for socialites from surrounding states. If guests were flipping through a copy of the Acorn yearbook one will find alum such as Hollywood’s Bea Arthur and a former president of Nicaragua, Violeta Chamorro.”
I sincerely hope some of our enjoyment from making this trip and capturing select memories with these photos and posts has translated to you, the readers.
The End (Until Next Time 🤔)

Watkins Glen has been on my todo list for many many years. The waterfalls and scenery in there are quite impressive from the photos I’ve seen.
From what we saw, the Watkins Glen area was beautiful. I would love to return with more time, but we had nonrefundable reservations and were on a somewhat tighter schedule that day.
Thanks for sharing more colors and more on this adventure you two had. The reds and oranges are not as prevalent out here so I love when someone shares them. It looks like the Inn at Blackstone would be quite the experience. It also causes me to wonder what it was like for those early women who first lived there. I too would like a visit to Watkins Glen!
It was my pleasure sharing these photos, Monte. I love seeing the bright yellow foliage you share. Our yellows don’t seem to reach that level of intensity here. The Inn at Blackstone was a fantastic find and experience. Because of its appearance, we wondered if we had the right place when we first arrived. The inside, while modern, has retained the original long and wide hallways and high ceilings from its past. I love these unexpected discoveries.
