We experienced our first two frosts on Wednesday and Thursday nights this week, with low temperatures in the upper twenties. This marks the end of many plants growing and blooming for the season, and it’s always a little sad to see those beautiful flowers die away.

I recently planted some new ferns, but I’m concerned they won’t have enough time to root before winter hits. To protect them, I built a cover that allows 85% of the light through, protecting them from frost while still giving them enough light. I’ll have to water them regularly since we’re currently experiencing a drought. However, the cover is easily retractable, so I can water them or roll back the cover during warm periods. The weather is predicted to reach the low 80s next Wednesday and Thursday; crazy weather.

  1. Looks like a nice heavy frost. I do like the leaves photo. The second one has that said feeling to it. Stay warm my friend.

    • One season ends, and another begins. No worries about staying warm long term. Have a good weekend, Monte!

  2. That’s an impressive cover! Hope it keeps them build some resilience in time. The first frosty leaf photo speaks November to me, even being much further north. We had our first snow on Halloween evening, even remained on the ground until the next morning.

    • I covered the ferns the night before the first frost and haven’t checked since. I’ll uncover them tomorrow for several days and to water them, hoping they’re still alive. 😧 I read that we’re supposed to have more snow this winter than “normal.” I don’t think we had any to speak of last winter, so perhaps it’s an easy prediction to prove true.
      Have a good weekend, Mark!
