A gaggle (15-20) of Airstream travel trailers arrived at the resort this week for a local Florida Airstream Owners get- together. Airstreams are a classic American design almost as much about art as function. In 1931, Airstream began with founder Wally Byam’s dream: to build a travel trailer that would move like a stream of air, be light enough to be towed by a car and create first-class accommodations anywhere.
While walking Maggie this morning I struck up a conversation with the wife of a couple who own one of the ones now at the resort. I quickly got the impression that restoring their Airstream was an act of love by her husband and perhaps not so much her own thing.
When I asked her what kind of activities the Airstream owners do when they get together she was stumped for a moment before finally saying they had chartered a boat tour in Cedar Key for today.
I let her off the hook from having to contribute anything else by wishing her a nice day and weekend.
Each day at one of these resorts brings something new.
I guess RVer’s are like photographers in that they can gravitate to a brand name or style. A love of the trailer as much as the lifestyle. I think they’re Kool looking, myself.
I think Airstreams are a bit of a special case, Monte. They have a mystique all their own. I find them fascinating, appealing and very attractive but a 5th Wheel is much more practical for travelers such as ourselves.
I have seen some pretty incredible customizations of airstreams. One of my neighbors down my block has a business/hobby of restoring old small campers – I don’t what kind they are, smaller ones.
Yeah, Mark, restoring and renovating older smaller camping trailers is big business and Airstreams are a specially hot item. The new ones still being produced are incredibly modern and luxurious these days with the associated high price.
People who own Air Streams are intresting to say the least.
Steve, most of the Airstream owner in this group seemed to be older and not very active. We seldom saw them outside or being social. Perhaps we just didn’t see it. To be honest, we’ve met more interesting people in common/normal campers. :-)
