Parked again, Darien, Georgia
Parked again, Darien, Georgia

We relocated yesterday, driving about 200 miles further south to Darien, Georgia. Darien is Georgia’s second oldest city, founded in 1736 and lies about 50 miles south of Savannah. The area has a lot of history as well as beautiful views by the water with ancient live oaks and Spanish moss.

The drive was uneventful, which when pulling a 40′ trailer is a successful day.  We did our first Truck-Stop refuel, maneuvering and parking among the big rigs — we’re not a great deal smaller. Maggie handles the travel days like a champ. I almost forget she’s in the truck.

There’s no particular reason why we picked Darien, except it was about the right distance for a days travel and there was a nice RV park in the area with affordable rates. This is our second real stop and the first one where the park is nearly full making for an interesting little community.

For our first day in the area we visited Fort King George just east of Darien.

“Fort King George, a mile east of present-day Darien, was the first English settlement of coastal Georgia. The fort was established to deter French expansion into the Altamaha region, as well as to assert British claims against the Spanish who had maintained a string of missions along the lower south Atlantic coast in the previous century.” — Darien City Website

We then drove south and east ending up at a beautiful public beach on Saint Simons Island. We’d discovered at Huntington Beach State Park Maggie loved the beach and ocean. The beach at Saint Simons was very dog friendly and Maggie was able to run free wading in her first tidal pool and playing with some new four legged friends on the beach. Bonnie and I shared how Maggie is becoming a dog totally different then the one we thought we knew and we then wondered if we would become different too?

Not to rub it in for those of you in the northern states having an awful winter but weather wise it was a near perfect day. However, after tomorrow it’s forecasted to be much colder, meaning below 40. :-)

We’re planning on being here at least a week, maybe longer, before continuing on to Florida.

I would enjoy your weather as we are cloudy at 31 degrees this morning and no beach in sight. So, I’m like PJ and will follow along through your blog. Enjoy!

I think you’re going to need floats on that rig to get far enough south to stay warm this weekend! ;) Glad to see that your journey has started off well. Have fun!

Boy, I’ve always loved those big live oaks with Spanish moss hanging from them. And they’re certainly very photogenic. Looks like you might get a few nights below freezing down there, but you’re also going to get some days in the 60’s. Sounds pretty good to me! I won’t even mention what we’re getting today…….
