Old equipment and/or machinery always catches my eye — although I like it in a little better shape. This is a Bickford & Huffman Farmer’s Favorite Grain Drill from around the late 1800’s or earlier 1900’s. I suspect it’s probably more likely the early 1900’s since it has a steel frame and the earlier one’s had wooden frames.
To use it, you put grain (corn, oats, wheat, etc.) and granulated fertilizer in the top bins, hitch it behind an early tractor and it digs a small furrow using metal disks cutting into the ground, drops the seeds/fertilizer into the furrow and then covers them up. Eureka — what a time saving invention this must have been when it first came on the market.
As you can see this one’s been setting in the weather for years and soon will not be recognizable. Time has a way of moving on and “things” unless recorded and preserved by those who appreciate them are left behind, all but forgotten by most.
Well said, Earl, “Time has a way of moving on and “things” unless recorded and preserved by those who appreciate them are left behind, all but forgotten by most.” And, yes left as it is nature will take it back.
Thanks, Monte, and yes nature has almost reclaimed this particular piece of equipment. I guess we can’t keep everything. :-)
