Our most recent period of Indian summer has broken with a cold front pushing through Monday night and yesterday bringing both abundant rain and lower temperatures. From a high of 70ºF Monday it couldn’t manage 50ºF Tuesday.
I’m actually happy to see more seasonal temperatures — I like winter in general and when it’s time, it’s time.
Perhaps these colder temperatures influenced my selection of this “darker” image but even without that influence I would have posted this for the way the fleeing warmth of the few remaining red leaves contrasts with the colder and darker surroundings. I always find items of conflict interesting and a fitting subject for photography.
I love winter, but then, I guess I live in a much more temperate area. No snow for me!
Contrast and conflict make for great photos, and the changing of the seasons is a beautiful example.
I like a little snow but not too much or for too long. :-)
Yes, the colder temperatures are here. We are expecting snow to begin falling this evening and continuing on through tomorrow afternoon, with an accumulation of 3-5 inches. And, this morning presented us with a beautiful pink/red sunrise. A good choice for you image. Interesting post processing. Care to share that?
Monte, thanks. The post processing was minor adjustments with many layers — I was experimenting. I used NIK Silver Efex and Color Efex along with Photoshop.
There are snow flurries in the air as I write this. No stopping Winter now. I’m prepared.
I like the selective color on this, Earl, especially with the sepia background. It looks very natural.
Ken, thanks, and you were smart to prepare for winter when you did. Of course next week we may be talking about 70 degree temperatures again. :-)
I came back to Charlotte on Tuesday morning. When I walked out of the airport, I was greeted by 45 degree temperatures and a wind. It felt especially cold since only the day before, I was sitting on the beach thinking it a bit too warm. LOL. I wanted to return to south Florida right away. :)
Paul, welcome back…you timed it just right to catch a bit of winter. I hope you had a great vacation in sunny Florida!
This is a really cool shot Earl! (no pun intended).
Mark, I appreciate that — thanks!
I love the conflict in this and your use of terms. “Conflict” has more oomph than “contrast”. Your description suits this picture perfectly, since one does sense the struggle to hang on to that last bit of warmth in Indian summer. The drama provides an energy that holds me.
Anita, Thanks. I selected the term “Conflict” to describe the struggle as I see it in this image of the color against the monotone representing the struggle of autumn giving way to winter. The strong contrast in the image helps play-up that struggle and conflict.
I love the delicate shades of red in contrast to the other desaturated tones. It shows beautifully the transition from autum to winter. What a great photograph!
Thanks, Martina.
