I found the heavy wooden truss structure in this thatched roofed fascinating. This hut particular serves as a wildlife observation point in The Elizabethan Gardens within the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, on the North end of Roanoke Island, Outer Banks, NC. This is near “The Lost Colony” site — additional post(s) to follow with photos from the Gardens.
Update: In further reading I’ve discovered the proper name for this structure is, “The thatched roof, 16th century-style gazebo overlooking the Roanoke Sound.” Sounds much better then “the hut” doesn’t it. :-)
Nice!!! Bring on more.
Thanks, Monte…I think I will! :-)
Good usage of the impressive beam for the leading diagonal.
Markus, entering this structure my eye immediately turned upward to this beam structure. It was then just about positioning. Thanks!
The construction is impressive and your compositions is also. Very nice.
Ken, thanks, I appreciate the comment and the kind words.
What a work of art! It is most certainly the work of a true master craftsman.
Steve, yes it is, but too much labor to be affordable in this day and age.
It’s good that you noticed this rugged construction. It makes a fine shot and good graphic too.
Don, it immediately grabbed my attention as soon as I saw it. I tend to note how things are made…you might have noticed that trait from some of my comments on your blog. :-)
Wow, that’s a construction not many would have an idea of how to dimension and build, with today’s standard. As you wrote above, it’s too time consuming to be affordable. Only a hobbyist would spend the time that’s needed.
Two beautiful pieces of work: the structure and your photograph. The framing adds so much movement and tension to this wonderful piece of construction.
great perspective and framing
