I have no clue what type of plant this is but I found the bloom and seeds to be both beautiful and captivating. From this angle a flock of white swans came to mind.

There are signs that the summer of 2018 might be winding down in the Piedmont of North Carolina, which is good since it’s now Fall. Ken, thanks. I searched Google images for cottonwood and none of the pictures of blooms or seed pods look like this. It may be related but I’m thinking it’s something else.
