I’m going to be spending time this week doing some general cameras and lens cleaning. The sensor self-cleaning functions of the Nikon D300/D700 seems to do a pretty good job but I’ve been noticing a few dust spots with my D700 that aren’t going away even with repeated cleanings. My lens could probably also use a general wipe down as well so I might as well take care of all of it at one time.
To be honest, this is the first time I’ve felt the need to clean the sensor on my D700.
I’d played around with the Adobe Lightroom 3 (LR3) Beta and I liked the function and tool improvements but I couldn’t tell how real of a performance improvement there was. Well, with the final version of LR3 installed and my main LR library converted, I’ve seen a noticeable performance improvement. This is with a library of about 23k photos.
I need to do a bit of spring cleaning myself. I’ve got various versions of LR catalog files all over the place. I, too, upgraded to LR 3 yesterday morning. I kept upgrading through the beta process and so I’m left with a bunch of outdated catalog files. I will be easy for me to clean up because I’ll just re-import all of my files into new catalogs … I’ve not been good at all in using keywords, so no big loss, really. :-) Sloppy! Sloppy! Sloppy!
Paul, I’ll not even comment on sloppy. My office is a mess and Bonnie stays out of it most of the time so she doesn’t “catch something.” I do better with files, folders and backups but the secret is to automate the process as much as possible, thereby eliminating the “me” factor. :-)
I just d/l LR3 last night, so really haven’t had a chance to kick the tires much. The noise reduction seems quite impressive.
I have been quite disappointed with the dust cleaning of the D700. I have loads of them that don’t even appear visible to my eye when looking at the sensor.
I’ll be interested in hearing your take on LR3 performance and functionality.
I’ve hear other people speak on the poor performance of the D700 dust cleaning but can’t complain of it myself. However, the D700 has collected more dust then my D300 ever has, but I don’t use them the same so I can’t fairly compare.
Now with my bare eyes I couldn’t see the specks I cleaned off the D700 sensor either, but after taking some test shots of the sky they seem to be gone.
