I drove to the Big Cypress National Preserve yesterday and at one point I stopped on Highway 41 and walked along the guardrail, with preserve waters were on the other side. In one stretch of about 300 feet I saw 35-40 of these baby alligators sunning themselves among the rocks and watching me from the water. They were about 12-14″ long. I didn’t see, but definitely heard, some much larger ones back in the brush.
I noticed the waters were full of fish as well, which explains what these guys eat — they’ll not be small for long.
My exploring ended early after a flat tire and spending the rest of the afternoon finding someone to fix it. :-(
Sorry about the flat but that’s one for the story book when retelling the adventure. That’s a lot of gators and some will not make. Was this taken with the fisheye or telephoto? :-)
Hey, isn’t there a rule against blogging while you are on vacation? :-)
Just catching up on some of your posts, looks like you are having some good wildlife encounters!
Oh, no, Earls breaking rules!
I make them — I break them! ;-)
Mark, the older I get the worst I am with following rules! ;-) The wildlife has been just okay…I’ve not had a lot of luck with birds on this trip.
