Yesterday, I had things around the house I wanted needed to do but because it was such a beautiful fall day, cool wet weather forecast for the next three days, I decided instead to ride to a favorite local park for a little photography.
I’d forgotten the massive road paving projects underway. I’ve heard about 9 million recovery dollars were recently released in NC for this type work so they’re paving anything in the area that doesn’t move. I sat waiting in my car at the entrance to the main highway for about 10 minutes before giving up and returning home. I really “wanted” to do get those things done around the house anyway.
One such chore, which took all afternoon, was installing a dog door in our recently added sunroom. We’ve reclaimed nighttime rights to our house by moving sleeping arrangements for our dogs (Foster & Maggie) to the sunroom–my wife now says it’s the most expensive dog house ever. With the weather mild we were able to leave the sunroom door partially open to allow them to come and go, but winter’s around the corner and a doggie door is a necessity.
Installing the door, I ran into metal framing in the sunroom wall I hadn’t expected, which left me only one mounting solution. The result was the door being perfect for Foster (short, part Basset Hound) but a little low for Maggie (tall, part Grey Hound or Whippet.) Luckily, Maggie’s the athlete of the two and seems to be able to crouch a bit coming in and out.
I taped the door flap up out of the way last night and they both have adapted to using the opening. Training with the flap down will come in a couple of days and may require treats and coaxing.
Now, perhaps I can get some rain shots today… ;-)
The road work sounds familiar. Here they work on the roads all summer, re-stripe everything in early fall just in time to spread sand and anti-skid stuff covering the stripes! :-) However, I do like not sliding through stop signs. Nice waterfall shot. Raining here today and I’ve vowed to get some rainy day shots.
Home improvement project seem to catch all of us. I spent parts of the last three days installing a new storm door. The insturctions said it should take about four hours to do the job; now was that the four hours I worked on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday!
At any rate, as I write, it’s getting it’s first “rain test”.
Seems to hit all of us sooner or later. But that is what winter is for – catching up on chores. :-)
Are they ever any home improvement jobs that come in under schedule? I know from experience with any chores I undertake that they all take longer than they “should”. I’ll bet the dogs are going to be glad that you couldn’t go through with your intention to play hooky from chores—especially if you get hit with really bad weather soon.
Show the door! Show the door!
@don – I guess you’ll be getting winter weather before you know it, normally we still have a while before we would expect any frozen stuff.
@Steve Skinner – So, you actually read the instructions? Humm…maybe that’s where I’m going wrong!
@Mark – My wife doesn’t discriminate against any season. She believes chores can be done year round! ;-)
@Anita Jesse – Yeah, the dogs are happy they now control their own coming and going…and so am I!
@Eric Jeschke – What, don’t you believe me? ;-)
