Elephant at NC Zoo

The Weekend Photo from Sunday’s post had a couple diagonal blades of grass crossing in front of flowers which appear to be the main subject of the photo. The grass, at first glance, seems to be a distraction but there’s something about it that keeps attracting my eye. Maybe it’s the gentle curve of the grass blades as your eye is drawn across the photo. Maybe it’s only me?

I’m mentioning this as an example of a photo that breaks certain photography principles (rules) but still results in an image that is pleasing personally.

I’m also mentioning it because the photo above also breaks certain principles–no animal photos from the rear (they usually don’t turn out well.} However, in this particular photo the elephant had turned just far enough to the right that I thought it worked and my being at a slightly lower vantage point emphasized its large physical stature.

The combination of conditions and factors that can make a photo work is almost infinite. It would be a shame to think that there were photographic principles that can’t be broken–break them sometimes, perhaps you’ll surprise yourself.
