Trail to the river It was later in the morning as I pulled into Riverview Park and I knew the light would not be the best for capturing the dam and falls. I’d hesitated on photographing at all this morning what with my spring allergies being bad the last couple of days. However, I’ve also been feeling guilty and antsy about not shooting as much as I like or need to.

I sometimes feel driven, in a positive way, to take photographs and if I don’t for a period I develop a bit of a mental funk. I’ve never gone out taking photos that I didn’t enjoy it, even if sometimes getting stated takes effort. That’s where I need to exercise self discipline–getting started.

Parking in the upper public park lot, I gathered my camera and lens/accessory bag and decided to take the longer trail down to the river. I was surprised at how cooler the temperature was just a few feet into the newly green forest. It’s amazing what were bare trees only a few weeks ago are now lush with foliage.

A short distance down the trail I began hearing the water at the dam. Reaching the riverside I was pleased to see that water was indeed running over the dams entire length. This was unexpected as there’s been no heavy rains for several days.

Waterfalls at Cooleemee Riverpark

The light was okay and I had the place all to myself. Perfect! More time was spent sitting on the rocks, listening, thinking, and absorbing the sounds and sights then taking photos. But each moment was productive and valuable.

When returning to my car I felt recharged–even with running nose and itchy eyes. It was well worth those small inconveniences. I need to always remember that. ;-)

How often do we need to keep learning this lesson? I continue to learn it and re-learn it. Great shots proving your points.

I can fully relate to what you are saying here. I have felt the same guilt myself many, many times.
