Purple Dead-nettle

Purple Dead-nettle

My initial observation as I walked a wooded trail near a small pond late last week was it was perhaps still early for spring wild flowers to be blooming–glancing down I realized I’d almost missed a spring production right under my feet.

Purple Dead-nettleThese photographs of a Purple Dead-nettle was taken with tripod using a Nikon 105 mm Macro lens, a Kenko 12 mm extension tube and a Phoenix Macro Ring Flash. It was my first time using an extension tube and ring flash for macro photography so it was a learning experience.

Sometimes with macro photography it’s had to judge scale. This particular dead-nettle had a maximin diameter of barely over one inch, leaf-tip to leaf-tip, and was hardly noticeable in the grass and leaves.

The second photograph, of the same plant, was taken from above to show the leaf and bloom arrangement around the central stem.

I find natures details at this level fascinating.
