I couldn’t resist this post-card view of Pilot Mountain, NC, this past weekend. The sky was beautifully clear and the beginning of autumn colors made it irresistible.
Pilot Mountain is located in northwest North Carolina with a nearby town of the same name.
Pilot Mountain, a quartzite monadnock rising to a peak 2,421 feet (738 m) above sea level, is one of the most distinctive natural features in the state of North Carolina. It is a remnant of the ancient chain of Sauratown Mountains. Its original Native American name is Jomeokee, for “great guide” or “pilot.” The Saura were the earliest known inhabitants of the region. The distinctive formation guided the Native Americans as well as the early European hunters through the region. — Wikipedia
For those who enjoy trivial information, the city of Mount Airy, NC, is located just a few miles north of Pilot Mountain and is the birthplace of actor Andy Griffith. Mount Airy was the basis of the fictional town of Mayberry on the TV classic “The Andy Griffith Show.” A fictional city, Mount Pilot, was often mentioned on the show and was named in honor of Pilot Mountain.
To grab this shot I’d suddenly whipped our car off the Interstate Highway and my wife’s immediately thoughts were we’d just suffered a major emergency. I think she was so relieved it wasn’t an emergency that she quickly forgave me for scaring her.
I need a sign on the back of my car which states, “This car makes sudden stops to take photos!” ;-)
