As I was growing up in the country, my family had a large summer garden that provided most of our food for the spring, summer and fall, and a great deal of our food, canned or frozen, for the winter.

The garden was over half an acre in size.  When picking beans or one of the other various vegetables we raised you’d think the rows would never end.  It was also a real chore to hoe or cultivate the garden but had to be done.  That was one of my duties when I reached a responsible age.

It’s been a long time since I’ve have a garden.  It doesn’t fit into our lifestyle anymore.  But that doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy the fresh produce during the spring and summer.

One of the simple pleasures on a Saturday morning is going to a Farmers Market and getting fresh vegetables or fruits.  There’s also fresh bread and baking delights to be had.

This morning my wife and I went to the downtown Salisbury Farmers Market.  It’s not a large market but there was a good representation available and everything looked great.

When it’s locally grown you can see the pride in the sellers eyes of their produce.  Many times it will be a multi-generational business with parents, grandparents and children present and supporting the presentation and sale of their labors.

We purchased some wonderful home grown tomatos.  I love BLT sandwiches or even just a good tomato slice on a fresh biscuit.  It makes me remember being young again and how good those tasted when my Mom fixed them.
