On two recent occasions I’ve noted an error message when I’ve tried to access Meandering Passage. This is the same error message that I posted a notice about yesterday. I researched information that suggested the error was being caused by a user maximum daily MySQL dB query limit. I’m using WordPress so the default database user has all dB queries accumulated against it’s account whenever anyone access the site. Traffic has been picking up lately and on a heavy day the total of those queries were exceeding a 50,000 maximum limit.

This wasn’t a setting that I had set or that I could change so I contacted my host technical support. They responded quickly enough and told me exactly what I already knew and suggest that I find a way to reduce database access. Now I’m using standard WordPress and while I know there could be some tailoring done to reduce queries, the only sure fired way to reduce the load would be to also reduce the traffic. Nope, not an option!

What’s made this especially frustrating is that I just moved my site from a server that the host said was full and slow to this current server and now I’m hitting another wall and being informed that it’s my problem?

After a few moments to cool off, I very patiently went back to tech support and asked if there was anyway they could increase this limit because I did not have a way to reduce the load at my end. There reply was short and sweet stating that they could not change this limit and ensure the stability of the other sites on this server. They also sent me a link to their other more expensive web hosting solutions such as Virtual Server Hosting…Gee thanks, but I don’t think I want to spend any more money with you!

To make a long story short, I’m moving Meandering Passage from my current host and it’s Shared Server Hosting plan to a new host that offers Grid Server Hosting. The new host is already set up and as I am typing this I’m just waiting for the new DNS information to populate out through the Internet pointing “www.meanderingpassage.com” to it’s new home.

Note: The new DNS information populated before I could publish this, so your reading it on the new site. :-)

The funny part of all of this is a few days ago I did a post about how I enjoy changing things. Sometimes your words come back to haunt you and all I want now is some stability!

P.S. – I’ve captured in another post some of my web hosting research information and selection insights. Hopefully some of this may be useful to someone else in a similar situation.
