Mac fans are strange sometimes (okay, maybe most times). It seems to be an unspoken competition to see who gets the first “unboxing” photo’s of a new Apple product. I not sure what is gained by winning, but it appears that Gizmodo got the honors with the Apple TV.

According to the latest tracking information, my Apple TV is on the FedEx vehicle for delivery today.

UPDATE: 3/22/07 10:10AM EDT

My Apple TV arrived via FedEx at 9:30AM EDT. Very nice and neat packaging but there are no cables included. I knew this when I order and had already purchased a HDMI cable. It’s set up and working. Below are a few of my initial observations.

It’s a good looking appliance that will look good setting anywhere.

It has an internal power supply. There’s only a simple power cable that is about 5-6′ long.

Set-up is simple and done via on-screen TV menu using the remote.

During set-up it has various settings for video output…including 720p and 1080i. I chose the 1080i and the output looks very good. I was expecting it to only support 720p?

The wireless reception is very good. It found neighbors wireless networks that I hadn’t seen before even using my laptop. it works okay over a G wireless network.

Connecting it to iTunes was simple. You enter a code on your PC to authorize the Apple TV to connect to your iTunes.

So far it seem fairly responsive.

That’s it for now. I’m off to explore some more.

Over at Highbrid Nation we have been talking the Apple TV and how unimpressed we are with it. I just don’t believe that most people will be able to get much out of it. Too many issues to deal with. I’ll likely be a while before I make such an investment.
