It seems a lot of people are interested in trying out Linux just now. I don’t know if it has anything to do with the less the stellar impact of Microsoft Vista or not, but I think it’s a good thing. From my recent test of Linux I would say it’s about ready for prime time on the desktop. Adrian Kingsley-Hughes at “ZDNet.com” recently asked his readers what distribution of Linux he should try.

OK, I’m getting ready to try Linux on one of my desktop PCs and rather than choose a distro myself I thought I’d let you choose it for me.

Ubuntu appears to be the strong favorite…not surprising, although my experience shows that openSUSE is a very strong package as well.

Well, I suspect that the reason OpenSuse isn’t higher is that Novell really hurt their street cred with the Microsoft deal. OpenSuse goes down with that ship by affiliation.
For what it’s worth, I run Ubuntu on all my machines (2 desktops, 2 laptops, and a server). But, OpenSuse is indeed a nice distro.

I agree about the Microsoft/Novell deal hurting openSUSE. What were they thinking?
I currently have a dual boot Ubuntu and openSUSE PC with the openSUSE side serving as a LAMP server as well. I’ve also installed a copy of Ubuntu on my Mac desktop using “Parallel Desktops” (virtual PCs).
