If you’ve looked at my currently reading list you may have noticed that I’m reading a series of books by Anne McCaffrey call the “Dragonriders of Pern”. These are science fiction or fantasy books dealing with the history of colonization of another planet called Pern. The colonist, in order to fight a natural hazard of this planet, genetically engineered a large intelligent dragon like creature from a much smaller version of Pern native wild life.
There’s a little story behind why I’m reading these books. Actually to be accurate, I’m listening to them as I commute to work each day in the form of audiobooks that I’ve loaded on my iPod. I have a FM converter that allows me to listen over the radio in my car. I’ve been a general fan of science fiction/fantasy for a long time but the key drive for reading this series is that it was one of the favorites of my son, Aaron, when he was younger.
The book I’m listening to now “Dolphins of Pern” is somewhere around book 13 of the series. I think there are around 20 books or so total. I’ve been listening to them in the order they were written and released. It’s been an interesting experience because the books describe different parts of the same Pern historic timeline. So each book is like a chapter of the same story. I understand now why my son enjoying these books so much.
I must admit that it’s become a personal quest for me to listen to all of them…who could stop in the middle of a story.
