Interesting story being reported on Verizon taking over some of the TV software coding from Microsoft after deciding that Microsoft could not meet it’s agreed upon timetable. It would appear from this that the inability to meet deadlines and produce workable applications extends beyond¬ just the OS Vista/Longhorn devision of Microsoft.
Unhappy over the memory footprint of applications and delays in rolling them out, Verizon has ditched some of Microsoft’s television software and has chosen instead to write its own. The Wall Street Journal reports that Verizon was adamant about meeting deadlines as it struggles for a foothold in the TV market dominated by cable and satellite operators. When it decided that Microsoft couldn’t meet the timetable, Verizon deployed engineers of its own from Texas and India to work on the software, most of which was then rolled out on time.
Verizon takes over Microsoft TV code
However, it’s noted in the story that Verizon remains committed to Microsoft technology and Microsoft has made significant inroads in the Television industry.
My feelings are that Microsoft has or may be about to turn a corner and will overcome many of the issues that has prevented rapid development and deployment of applications the last few years.¬ This opinion is based upon small indicators and my own hunch…not hard fact.
