If you’ve read my previous post you know I recently bought an Apple Mac Mini for my wife to replace her older Windows PC. The Mini came with 512mb of memory which was enough for most things but her work habits are to have a number of applications open and then decide to play a game. This would leave the game paging from the hard disk resulting in noticeable slower performance.
Wanting her to have the best computing experience, I decided to upgrade the Mac Mini to 1gb of memory. The Mac Mini has two slots and will support up to 2gb (2x1gb) of memory. Apple recommends that the same size DIMM’s be installed in both slots for best performance. The Mini uses 667MHz 200 Pin DDR2 PC5300 SO-DIMM modules. These modules are the same ones used by the MacBook Pro systems.
There are a number of guides on the Internet that can walk you through the upgrade process.
One is a step-by-step picture guide at the Applefritter web site and the other is a very good video guide at OWC. You can also purchase your memory at OWC.
The upgrade went well with no problems and results were well worth the cost and 30 minutes it took. From my experience, I feel Apple’s OS X is much happier with 1gb of memory.
