Foregive me as I take a few moments to make some observations about this age we live in. Being in my 50’s I grew up in much different times then now. I look around today and it’s amazing.

We live in an age of almost instant communications where not only the written text of events is available but also full color video in unrelenting detail. Events that seem to warrant the most attention are those that portray the most suffering or those depicting the worst of mankind. Communications is business with profits driven by viewer-ship and viewer-ship driven by base human curiosities. News is not simply news any longer, it’s a show, a production, which in order to survive must keep the goal of attracting an increasing amount of viewers or readers. We are bombarded by it daily, driven by our human need to be informed.

Then when this “real life” becomes more then we can bear, we escape to the many forms of entertainment available. Internet sites, music, videos, games, or books, there are millions of ways to stimulate our minds. The highest of highs to the lowest of lows are all available to be explored. As we absorb more we continue to search for the next thing, our next toy, a better game, additional stimulation, instant gratification!

I can’t help but wonder what all of this will hold for our children who are growing up now. How will they see themselves and what will be their core values?

I’m sure my parents also asked this question as my generation was growing up during the Cold War era.
