I dropped my Nikon D600 body off with UPS this afternoon in regards to the recent Nikon Technical Service Advisory for all users of the D600. This service advisory includes the inspection, cleaning and replacement of the shutter assembly and related parts, FREE OF CHARGE as well as the cost of shipping the D600 camera to Nikon and its return.
I appreciate Nikon finally doing the right thing if for no other reason then to support and assure the continuing value of the D600 model. I had experienced some small dust and perhaps oil spots but a wet cleaning seemed to take care of the initial problem.
If any D600 owners didn’t receive an email from Nikon and haven’t seen this mentioned anywhere else let me know and I’ll forward you the link and steps to follow.

Update: The D600 body was received back from Nikon service on March 11th.
Not being a Nikon owner I hadn’t heard of that problem. Interesting that it was evidently severe enough to warrant an across the board recall. It’s always tough to send a camera off for repair, hopefully it will come back better than new. That reminds me, need to send mine in for cleaning before travel season starts up again. Not that it ended! :)
Tom, This issue with the D600 has been ongoing since it’s first release. It’s been severe with oil and dust on the sensor for some but only minor in my case with only a few spots I could clean myself. My concern was long term because this problem seemed to be due to some shutter design issues.
Nikon had been dealing with this reluctantly on a case by case basis and had quickly released the new model D610 with this problem fixed…which was about the only change. However, rumors of a legal class action suit of D600 owners may have motivated them to actually fix all D600’s. I’m glad to see them finally address this across the board. Restores a little confidence in Nikon.
LOL. I liked your comment, Earl. I see that they didn’t do this out of the goodness of their heart. I’d heard about the issues with oil, etc, but I didn’t realize that the D610 was basically just a fix for the D600. Nice. :D
Paul, Perhaps there was a day when companies could be considered to have “hearts” but I’m fairly certain they no longer do. A saying I’ve relied upon to guide understanding of motivation these days is “follow the money.” I’m sure fixing the D600 was the lesser of the two “evils” — the right thing, even if “forced” in this case…but I’ll take it! :-)
I plan on sending my 600 out soon. I’ve had problems with spots but the local shop I purchased it from has free sensor cleaning and they did a fine job. Overall, I think it’s a great camera and I think Nikon is doing the right thing, though they should have taken action sooner.
