Today, I’d planned on visiting one of my nearby photographic nature areas after completing projects at home this morning. This area is heavily wooded and a noon-time sun can actually be a blessing with getting light through the forest canopy to shoot by.
However, while driving to the area the sky quickly clouded over to a solid featureless gray. It was dark enough among the trees at ground level that I had to increase the ISO setting a couple of steps.
I don’t mind shooting in gray conditions as I’ve found you can get some wonderful moody images. I don’t know there are many conditions I mind making photos in any more.
I have a thing for photos with paths or trails that lead away or fade off into the distance–this one qualifies.
I find cloudy or foggy days the best time to make photographs in the forest. There conditions certainly help with range of contrast issues. Working as a forester for over 30 years on the north coast, I saw many foggy days in the woods; they were the best with or without a camera.
What an inviting path to walk on! I was to shoot some portraits last week when the mother called and wanted to reschedule because it was cloudy outside. I told her I preferred the overcast sky as the clouds provide a great diffuser. I’m also like you and will attempt shooting anytime of the day.
The overcast day provided excellent lighting, even if subdued, for this path shot. I like how the shadows in the trees are mild and open. A very appealing path that looks very inviting.
I felt a little more relaxed just veiwing this. I can imagine how lovely it was to walk along that inviting path. Those overcast days are wonderful gifts, aren’t they?
Thanks everyone for your comments. I see I’m not the only one that enjoys the “peace” of an overcast day. :-)
