Sweetgum Seed Pods
Sweetgum Seed Pods On White River Sand

Plants have a multitude of means of protecting and spreading their seeds. I’ve always found the almost alien looking Sweetgum (Liquidambar Styraciflua) Tree seed pods to be interesting with their spiky woody burrs.

While these pods may look like they’re laying on the white beaches of some resort, or perhaps in a manicured sandbox, they’re actually on freshly deposited river sand.

I made this image using a 70-300mm zoom at 300mm to compress the image, hopefully giving a feeling of being closer. Even at f/16 the depth of field was fairly shallow.
