200809171314.jpgFollowing recent new camera announcements by Nikon, Canon has struck back with an announced update to their full frame EOS 5D. The new EOS 5D Mark II has an amazing 21.1 megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor, an ISO range of 100-6400 (enhanced to 25600), live view shooting, live view “HD” videos, a 3.0 inch LCD and more.

The specifications are impressive. From a quick glance the “weaker specs” appear to be the frame rate (3.9 fps) and the autofocus (9 AF points plus 6 AF assist points).

Imagine the storage space this baby is going to eat up with those LARGE still photos and that HD Video. ;-)

If you’re a Canon photographer this will probably be one of those “have-to-haves.”

Definitely an impressive upgrade to an already good camera. This new model is to be available in November for approximately $2,700 – body-only.

Here’s some other sources of information on this announcement:

  1. Let the pixel wars continue! I would imagine that Nikon will introduce a D3x, or something like that, that uses the same sized sensor but pushes 25 MP or more. Meanwhile, my D300 continues on. I feel so left behind! ;-)

Oh, BTW, have Canon figured out how to do multiple exposure yet or to place the mirror up button/dial somewhere convenient? ;-)

  2. @Paul: Well I think I’ll invest in hard drive suppliers. If you shoot RAW the file for a 20+ MP image must be huge and if you edited it in Photoshop and saved it as a PSD file…oh my… :-)

But it’s like you said before…would most people really be able to tell the difference? I don’t know…I’ll read the reviews when it’s out to see if there is a difference.

  3. I think that they camera manufacturers go a bit overboard most times. I mean, come on! HD video in a still camera?!!! I think that I’ll invest in the same thing. Soon, 1 TB will be the standard, if it isn’t already!
