Looking into Rock Castle Gorge, near Floyd, VA, USA. Settled before the American Revolution, at one time 30 families lived off the land here but now only the occasional homestead remnant can be seen.

A photo, or combination of photos — in this case three, taken during a recent pleasure drive to the nearby mountains.  Lovely clouds on this particular day!

  1. Nice view from this ridge. What would it be like to wake to such a scene as this each and every day? You did a good job on this on!

    • If this was the scene from the porch or deck of my house I’d probably be sitting there every morning and evening with a silly smile upon my face. :-)

  2. This image really benefits from the larger view. A wonderful sky above this huge vista. What a view!

  3. Great image! Is there a reason people don’t live there now?

    • Chris, there are some single family residents in the valley now but none of the original settlement farms have survived. I believe even at the time the standard of living they were able to scrape out was tenuous at best and better opportunities came along for future generations — the same story for so many of America’s farmers. Thanks!
